Press Release: Turn and Gymnastic Circle GymSports Facility Gets In-Principle Approval
For Immediate Release
Hamilton, 9 December 2024 – Turn and Gymnastic Circle (T&GC), a cornerstone of Hamilton's gymnastics community since 1953, has taken a significant step forward in its journey to establish a new, state-of-the-art gymsports facility at the Eastlink Community Hub (ECH). The Community and Natural Environment Committee of Hamilton City Council has granted in-principle approval for T&GC to develop the facility in collaboration with ECH.
This milestone reflects the culmination of years of effort by T&GC to find a permanent home after operating from the John West Indoor Training Centre since 2018. With this facility now required for other activities by the Hamilton Old Boys Rugby Sports Club, T&GC is planning a new purpose-built facility to meet the growing demand for gymnastics in the region. The club’s membership has surged from 100 to 510 since 2018, with an additional 50 members joining following a merger with Spiralz Rhythmic Gymnastics in 2023.
The proposed gymsports facility will provide a 1,400 square metre space, including a high-ceiling gymnasium, changing rooms, storage, and administrative offices. The estimated cost of $1.8 million will be partially covered by $500,000 in seed funding from the sale of T&GC's former premises, with the remainder to be sought through community and grant funding. Construction is expected to begin in 2026.
Enhancing Community and Regional Gymnastics Access:
This new facility aligns with the findings of the 2024 Hamilton Gymnastics Facility Network Study, which highlighted a critical need for expanded gymnastics facilities in Hamilton. The study emphasised that existing clubs are at capacity, with significant unmet demand. A purpose-built facility at Eastlink Community Hub will provide much-needed space for artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, trampolining, and tumbling.
The development will benefit not only T&GC members but also other regional users, including schools and neighbouring clubs. Furthermore, it will complement Eastlink Community Hub’s vision as a collaborative, multi-sport venue serving diverse community needs.
A Strategic Fit for Hamilton's Future:
T&GC’s new home will play a pivotal role in Hamilton’s broader strategy for sports and recreation. By integrating with Eastlink Community Hub, the facility will create opportunities for increased participation and enhanced community engagement. It also supports the Council’s Play Strategy, which emphasises providing accessible spaces for everyone to play and stay active.
T&GC President Emma Brookes expressed gratitude for the support:
“We are thrilled with the council's in-principle approval. This marks an important step toward securing a future for our club and the many young gymnasts who dream of growing their skills in a facility designed for success. We’re excited to be part of Eastlink’s vision for a dynamic community sports hub.”
The final lease and facility plans will be reviewed by the committee in a future meeting. In the meantime, T&GC continues its efforts to engage with stakeholders and funders to bring this vision to life.
